![]() |
Ruairķ Somers received his first uilleann pipes lessons from Leo Rowsome in Dublin at the age of nine. A move to County Mayo in 1975 afforded him the opportunity of playing on a regular basis with many well-known Irish musicians such as fiddler Fred Finn and flutist Seamus Tansey. Ruairķ currently resides in County Meath where he plays in a number of traditional sessions locally and in the surrounding Counties of Cavan and Louth. Since the 1970s, he has been teaching uilleann pipes and whistle in his home and in local community venues. He is a member of the Finton Lalor Pipe Band and has also taught pipe bands in Counties Mayo, Laois, and Sligo. Ruairķ has toured the US, Germany, France, Sweden, and Belgium with various groups, the most well known of which was General Humbert. He is a reed maker and has a keen interest in developing simple techniques to facilitate wide usage. |
