Brendan Monaghan | bodhran,tin whistle

monaghan.jpg (21568 bytes) A native of County Down, Ireland, Brendan Monaghan is an entirely self-taught musician who began playing at 13, not long after the death of an older brother who left behind an array of musical instruments. During his teens he competed in Fleadh and Scor competitions, playing whistles and bodhran and also competing in the traditional singing category. He became Ulster Champion in traditional singing and All Ireland Champion in the Bodhran. Brendan currently performs widely, teaches, and is a much sought after session musician. For the last several years he has been a part of Phil Coulter's band and has toured internationally. He has recorded with Coulter and James Galway, with whom he recently appeared at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York and in Washington, DC, where he performed for President and Mrs. Clinton at the White House.

Brendan also plays with the group, Different Drums of Ireland, bridging the gap between communities in Ireland by bringing together bodhrans, lambeg drums, long drums, bones, pipes, and whistles to celebrate the rhythms and music of the respective cultures.
